We are currently working with the  The Dry Creek Conservancy to determine the feasibility of Salmon and Steelhead returning to Clover Valley Creek. The Dry Creek Conservancy has agreed to provide the scientific resources needed to help determine if the fish can make it up into Clover Valley Creek and if the natural resources are conducive to spawning if and when they can get there. The survey of Clover Valley Creek led by the Dry Creek Conservancy biologist, Cyndi Brinkhurst, is currently in process.

The purpose of the creek survey is :

Once this data is collected, sound decisions can be made to benefit the natural riparian resources on Clover Valley Creek.

What is developed in Clover Valley will directly affect the Dry Creek Watershed. As you may know the Dry Creek Watershed has recently been designated as critical habitat for the Central Valley California Steelhead trout, which also includes waters potential for habitat, such as Clover Valley Creek. Under ESA requirements, (Endangered Species Act) all federal agencies must:

"ensure any actions they authorize, fund or carry out are NOT likely to jeopardize the continued existence of a species, or destroy or adversely modify its designated critical habitat”.

Surveying Clover Valley Creek has been an amazing journey. Words cannot describe its beauty.  Small waterfalls cascade into the creek from wetlands, we  use machetes to break our way thru the overhanging trees and bushes and then the stream opens up into a beautiful corridor covered with oaks, cottonwoods and willows. We see small fish traversing thru the rippling stream, we crawl over several beaver dams, observe the Western Pod Turtle, watch frogs and crawdads and hear the chirping of what seems to be hundreds of species of birds.  We travel farther up stream and come across an old 'De Soto' hub cap embedded in the stream for over 60 years. We discover an ancient Native American camp surrounded by 15 foot granite boulders and in the middle of the stream are grinding rocks created by the people that lived here thousands of years ago.  If I didn't know we were in Rocklin, California I would swear we were going thru some undiscovered area of the Amazon River.  What an amazing adventure.
